Two bottles sit on a shelf. Same label. Same font. Same color scheme. One costs $45 and contains the skincare formula you spent eighteen months developing. The other costs $12 and contains something that shares the packaging but not the product.
Your customer doesn't know which one they're holding.

The counterfeit problem used to belong to luxury watch brands and pharmaceutical companies. It belongs to anyone selling a differentiated product through Amazon, a third-party distributor, or any marketplace where your control over the supply chain ends at the warehouse door.
How do you know if your product has been counterfeited?
Usually a customer tells you. They bought your product from a third-party seller and noticed the smell was off. The texture wrong. The results didn't match what previous users reported. One-star review: "Not the same product I bought from their website."
By the time you find out, the counterfeiter has sold a few hundred units. The damage to your brand is already in the review section.
The question isn't whether your product will be counterfeited if it's selling well. It's whether you'll catch it before your customers do.
What a QR code authentication system does
A QR code authentication label works like this: each product gets a unique QR code that links to a verification page you control. The customer scans it. The page confirms: "This is a genuine [Brand] product, verified authentic."
If the product is counterfeit, the QR code either won't scan (if the counterfeiter didn't copy it), will link to your verification page with no match found, or will register as an unusually distant scan — wrong geography for the product's distribution.
Sophisticated implementations add one-time-use codes: each code can only be "verified" once. A code that's already been verified from a different location raises a flag. The basic version — a QR code linking to a product authentication page — stops the casual counterfeiter and gives your honest customers a way to check.

Who needs product authentication QR codes?
Supplement brands. Counterfeits in the supplement category often contain filler or incorrect dosing. Customers are ingesting your product. They need to know it's real.
Skincare and cosmetics. Knock-offs use cheaper ingredients that can cause reactions. Amazon counterfeit enforcement is improving, but it's not fast enough.
Electronics accessories. Fake cables, chargers, and accessories carry safety risks. A verification QR gives retailers a reason to stock your brand over generics.
Any product with proven repeat buyers. If customers re-order, they'll notice a counterfeit. Make it easy for them to confirm before they chalk a bad experience up to your brand.
How to build a product authentication QR code
The basic version requires three things:
1. A unique code per SKU or per unit. Per-SKU is simpler to manage. Per-unit is more secure.
2. A verification page. A single page that accepts the code as a URL parameter and displays authentication status. Can be built on a simple landing page or your existing website.
3. A dynamic QR code. Create it on MyQR Barcode Generator. Dynamic so you can update the destination URL later if you rebuild the verification page — without reprinting your labels.
Print the QR code on your product label, hang tag, or inner packaging. Include a short instruction: "Scan to verify authenticity."
What retailers and buyers now expect
Major distributors and some retailers now require proof-of-authenticity systems as a condition of carrying a product. A QR authentication code on your label signals that you take your brand seriously.
A buyer at a regional chain doesn't want a call from a consumer affairs department about counterfeit products on their shelves. Your authentication QR is a line on a checklist they're increasingly using when evaluating suppliers.
If you're planning to sell through retail, add the authentication QR now — not after your first distribution agreement asks for it. And if you're also working on your GS1 barcode registration for retail scanning, put both codes on the same label. The barcode handles the POS system. The QR handles the customer.
