What Code 128 is and why carriers use it
Code 128 is a one-dimensional barcode that can encode all 128 ASCII characters — letters, numbers, and symbols. It's compact, high-density, and readable at speed on conveyor belts.
Every major carrier — UPS, FedEx, USPS, DHL — prints Code 128 barcodes on their shipping labels. The barcode encodes the tracking number, which is the key that unlocks the carrier's tracking database. When a hub scanner reads it, the carrier's system logs the event, updates the tracking record, and triggers the next routing instruction.
What's inside the barcode on a shipping label
A shipping label barcode encodes the tracking number. That tracking number is linked to a record in the carrier's system containing origin and destination address, service level (ground, priority, overnight), package weight and dimensions, insurance value, special handling instructions, and return address.
The barcode itself holds only the tracking number. The tracking number is the key. The carrier database is the record.
What happens when the barcode fails to scan
A barcode fails when: the print resolution is too low, the contrast is insufficient (printing on kraft paper or near a colored area), the barcode is crumpled or wet, or the barcode size is too small for the scanner distance.
A failed scan at the first hub sends the package into a manual sort queue. Manual sort takes longer, costs the carrier more, and sometimes routes packages incorrectly. Packages that fail repeated scans through a facility can be held, returned, or in rare cases, lost — with no tracking event to explain what happened.

The two barcodes small businesses consistently miss
FBA compliance labels. Amazon's Fulfillment by Amazon requires an FNSKU barcode on every product unit, separate from your UPC. The FNSKU is a Code 128 barcode Amazon generates for your specific product listing. Missing or incorrect FNSKU labels get your inventory quarantined at the fulfillment center. Packing slip barcodes. Some 3PLs and distributors require a barcode on the packing slip or pick list, not just the outer label. This lets their receiving teams scan the slip instead of typing a PO number. Ask your 3PL what they require before your first shipment.
