Why manual inventory always drifts
Manual inventory control has a fundamental failure mode: it requires human consistency to stay accurate. Every transaction that doesn't get recorded immediately adds error. Choosing the right barcode format for inventory
Code 128: The standard for internal inventory. Encodes letters, numbers, and symbols. Used by most warehouse management systems and retail receiving operations. Choose this for internal SKU barcodes.
QR codes: Two-dimensional, scannable by phone camera. Good for linking an inventory item to a product page or serial number lookup. Better for assets than high-volume inventory scanning.

What the first month looks like
Week 1: Label all existing inventory. Set up initial counts in your software. Budget a full day or two β it takes longer than expected.
Week 2: Use the scanner for all receiving and picking. Resist the urge to "just type it in."
Week 3: First comparison. Pull the system's count and compare to a spot physical count on three fast-moving SKUs. Expect them to match within 5%.
