What is GS1 Sunrise 2027?
GS1 Sunrise 2027 is the global retail industry deadline by which all point-of-sale systems must be capable of reading a GTIN encoded in a 2D barcode — a QR code or GS1 DataMatrix — alongside traditional UPC and EAN barcodes.
Does the QR code replace my existing UPC/EAN barcode?
No. During the Sunrise 2027 transition, both the 1D barcode and the 2D code appear on packaging. GS1 recommends placing the 2D code within 50mm of the existing 1D barcode. The 1D barcode remains for backward compatibility with older scanners.
What is GS1 Digital Link?
GS1 Digital Link is the standard that formats GS1 identifiers — GTINs, batch numbers, serial numbers, expiry dates — into a web URI encoded in a QR code. Scanners extract the GTIN for checkout; phones open the product web page. One code, two audiences.
Do I need a GS1 company prefix to generate these codes?
Yes. A valid GS1 company prefix and registered GTINs are required to generate legitimate GS1 Digital Link codes. Join your local GS1 member organization (gs1.org) to obtain a company prefix if you do not already have one.
What is the EU Digital Product Passport?
The EU Digital Product Passport (DPP) is an EU regulation requiring products sold in the EU to carry machine-readable data about their materials, repairability, recycled content, and disposal guidance. GS1 Digital Link is the recommended carrier format. Mandatory for batteries from 2027, expanding to textiles and electronics through 2030.

Yes. You can use your own domain (recommended for long-term brand control) or our platform domain as the resolver. Either approach produces a compliant GS1 Digital Link URI that works at retail checkout and for consumer scanning.
